Re: Rizal's Girlfriends

Post by Ateo on Thu Mar 24, 2011 2:09 pm

I'm sorry I have been busy in another board, the Chess Board, and I had been negligent in updating this thread.

Before focusing more on the love life of our national hero, let us give a nod to the fact that this is a religious forum. So, let us make a side trip and ask briefly what really were the religious beliefs of our national hero. Thankfully, Viola recorded his insights of what Rizal thought and believed about religion. Let me quote an entire passage from Viola and collect the insights yourself. I will give my views in the next post but I hope some of you will share your insights too.

" Among various books placed on his study table, beside Greek and Latin texts of the Gospel, there were also some with rare characters that were read backwards: It was a Hebrew Bible from which he sometimes translated for me some passages related to the religious ideas he expounded in the Noli me tángere, which he was correcting and cutting down at the time for economic and aesthetic reasons, suppressing words, passages, and chapters more or less bombastic. He said that he had studied Hebrew on purpose in order to be on the level of those who had written on the religion of Christ. Inasmuch as the original Bible was in Hebrew [Editor's note: Actually the Old Testament excluding those books in the Roman Catholic Old Testament what Protestants call the Apocrypha. The New Testament was originally written in Greek. – rly] he wanted to drink in the original fountains and at all events to be able to sustain religious polemics that his novel might arouse.

According to his criterion, the religion of Christ was the most perfect among all the known religions not only for the moral spirit of its doctrines but also because it is the religion that has greatly influenced the discipline and moralization of mankind. However, on account of the modifications introduced by malice or religious fanaticism, it has become at present like a building that by dint of driving wedges into it, it has been greatly disfigured and threatens to fall apart. By way of example he cited Purgatory which is simply one of so many mystical inventions intended principally for the exploitation through the sale of ribbons, rosaries, and other religious articles to the candid and ignorant poor. As regards Hell he added it should not be as painted or photographed or cinematographed in religious books whose direct object is also the exploitation of one’s fellow men. To Dr. Rizal Christ was a religious genius, just ad Castelar was an oratorical genius and Bismarck was a genius in politics."

Maximo Viola

Re: Rizal's Girlfriends

Diosangapstol and Rushmore, thank you for your comments.

Rizal was studying the Bible, not for his spiritual nourishment but "to to be able to sustain religious polemics". In effect, he was very much like us here in Bereans. He was preparing to argue and debate on religious matters.

So, what was his religion then? I have the answer, hehehehe. Well, for one, he did not believe in Purgatory. He believed that "Purgatory is simply one of so many mystical inventions intended principally for the exploitation through the sale of ribbons, rosaries, and other religious articles to the candid and ignorant poor." He definitely was not a Catholic at that time. Roman Catholicism does not believe in turo-turo Christianity, where one can choose to be Catholic but not agree to some of its teachings (are you listening, XIII?). Catholics believe that their church has the fullness of the revelation and the grace of God. So, Rizal could not spurn the Catholic concepts of Purgatory and remained a good Catholic. No way, siree.

In fact, his swipe at the sale of sacramental (rosaries, etc.) sounds very much like Protestantism; but which one? Well, let us look at his Christology, his concept of Christ. He believed that "Christ was a religious genius, just and Castelar was an oratorical genius and Bismarck was a genius in politics." Jesus H. Christ! To Rizal, Jesus was a genius just like Castelar and Bismarck. Well, Bismarck was a brilliant man, alright; he oversaw the unification of Germany and is considered as a German hero. But he was also anti-Catholic and introduced anti-Catholic legislation. Worse, Bismarck was just a man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_von_Bismarck

To Rizal, Jesus was brilliant but not that All Knowing All Powerful God. (There would have been no need to say that Christ was a genius if one believes that He is All-Knowing.) So, RIZAL BELIEVED THAT JESUS WAS JUST A MAN, BRILLIANT, BUT JUST A MAN!

In conclusion, Rizal was the first believer of the INC. He even predated Ka Felix! The Iglesia should capitalize on this fact and thank me.

But seriously, Rizal expressed Nestorian beliefs.

Rizal's Great Love

It is poetic coincidence that neither Josephine Bracken St. nor Leonor Rivera St. intersects Rizal Avenue in Manila. (No major Philippine street is named after either one of those two other great loves of our hero.) The kunsintidor Pinoys chose to honor instead an Austrian who had never been the Philippines and whose claim to history is that he was loved by Rizal and he loved him back. Today, in heaven, Rizal and Blumentritt must be looking down and are touched by the thoughtfulness of a nation that places Blumentritt Station right on Rizal Avenue. A hundred years ago, they were separated by distance, a revolution, and conservative social norms; today, Blumentritt Station kisses Rizal Avenue all the time.

The next time you will be in Blumentritt remember that you are at the heart of one of the most memorable love stories in the history of this country. Today, a collection of letters that recorded this remarkable relationship is now worth 8 million dollars! (ref. http://www.mnnetherlands.com/dir/_page/100348/)

Next post, I will tell you who was Ferdinand Blumentritt.

Hugs to a favorite friend

One of the first things that a casual student of Rizaliana notices when studying the Rizal-Blumentritt correspondence is that the letters were just so affectionate. The latter correspondences were peppered with so many "affectionate hugs".

Samples:

Your friend embraces you, José Rizal
http://www.univie.ac.at/ksa/apsis/au...l/rbcor090.htm

An embrace from your most affectionate, Rizal
http://www.univie.ac.at/ksa/apsis/au...l/rbcor034.htm

I will write you many more letters and for that reason I conclude the present one greeting and embracing you fondly. Rizal
http://www.univie.ac.at/ksa/apsis/au...l/rbcor039.htm

And in later letters, Blumentritt returned the hugs with similar closing:

With affectionate regards from us to you and yours. An embrace from, Blumentritt
http://www.univie.ac.at/ksa/apsis/au...l/rbcor166.htm

But, of course, our historians quickly dismissed and pooh-poohed this affectionate exchange by reassuring us that this is a typical Spanish way of greeting close friends. As a Spanish speaker, let me tell that indeed it is true. I sometimes close my letter by saying "abrazos" (embrace). However, you only do that to really very close friends and only when there is affection. You don't do that to intellectual contacts like the Professor Blumentritt, for example. And Blumentritt, who was an Austrian did not have "abrazos" in their formal Austrian culture. But while initially formal, he wholeheartedly returned Rizal's "abrazos" in latter letters.

We were reassured that there is nothing in these "abrazos", but some contemporaries of Rizal suspected something (and I will tell you about this later). Rizal, by the way, did not do the "abrazos" with his fellow-macho propagandista pinoys.

More next time.

Hugs and kisses,

Ateo

Re: Rizal's Girlfriends

Sexual Attitudes of Pinoys

In order to understand better the sexual and social attitudes of our hero, let us first try to understand the sexual and social attitudes of us pinoys. At present, we are among the most sexually conservative nations in the world -- thanks to the Catholic Church and the Evangelical movement. We prohibit pre-marital sex, divorce, sexual education, same-sex relationships, birth control, prostitution, etc., etc., even if mother Spain and papal Rome have already allowed all of these. As the only country in the entire planet not to have legal divorce, we certainly earned the honor of being the most sexually uptight country in the world.

But historically speaking, we were much more liberal. The arrival of the frailes and the evangelists mixed up our culture, so we end up sexually schizophreniac -- conservative in public but liberal in private.

Arguably one of the most important historical book on the attitudes of pinoys is the book by Morga entitled Sucesos de las islas filipinas. Written in 1593, it described the sexual and social attitudes of pinoys at that time when we were just barely colonized and still retained our original attitude. The book is so important that Blumentritt quoted from it and encouraged Rizal to study it. Rizal decided to annotate it -- publish a critique. The book claimed that the pinoys were so sexually liberal that it proves that they were uncivilized. The nationalistic hero defended the pinoys, of course, and end up showing his conservative side. We can read excerpts of Morga now and know a little more about ourselves. Please read between the lines and discount the colonial attitude of the Spanish historian and the conservative and defensive attitude of Rizal.

http://www.manusya.journals.chula.ac...eyes_56-65.pdf

Blumentritt, who himself was a historian referred to earlier sources and wrote that the Tagalogs displayed a number of animal-like faculties. "They were retained an acute sense of smell, especially the women, who were “able to find out whether the men nearby them are sexually excited or not” (Blumentritt 1980:34-35).’

" Virginity is not a virtue for the girls easily give themselves up to any of their lovers, and only a small number of them are still virgin when they are brought before the altar for marriage. Sexual intercourse, according to Cañamaque, is performed without any ceremony even in the streets. The same writer claims that fornication is also a children’s vice. Cañamaque says that they are a people without any feeling of shame. Women and men especially in the provinces, allow themselves to be seen completely naked."(Blumentritt 1980:46)

Hmmm, we were already fornicating at that time.

Blumentritt aside, when Rizal started to study Morga, he found a graphic descriptions of pinoy sexuality that included fornication, adultery, forms of polygamy, polyandry, concubinage, incest and what they called the ‘sin against nature’, in other words sodomy, which encompassed homosexual, heterosexual and bestial anal penetration. Sex, to the pre-colonial natives, evidently entailed much more than the propagation of the species. It was also enjoyed, much to the chroniclers’ disgust, purely in the pursuit of carnal pleasure.

The Filipino women was the main target of this colonial historians. "The women are beautiful, but unchaste. They do not hesitate to commit adultery, because they receive no punishment for it…[They are] extremely lewd, and they even encourage their own daughters to a life of unchastity; so that there is nothing so vile for the latter that they cannot do it before their mothers, since they incur no punishment."(Loarca 1582:1618)

How did the poor Rizal defended his country from this attacks on our morals and attitudes? Ineffectively. He initially used the Catholic line and simply said that the pinays simply wanted to procreate thus they liked sex. Hahahahaha.

Rizal, however, made a very good observation about the social attitude of Pinoys during those times. "Marriage in pre-Spanish times, Rizal contended, was a union of equals, more egalitarian in fact than contemporary European customs. The Spanish chroniclers had disparaged the marriage and divorce customs they encountered, claiming they illustrated the amorality of native culture and a lack of respect for women, but in reality, contended Rizal, marriage had been a union of equals. Women were not forced into arranged marriages but could marry the husband of their own choice, showing that they enjoyed the same autonomy as men." Divorce, for example, was legal during pre-hispanic times and women were treated as equals.

At this point, we should pause and reflect that while we have become so conservative at one hand, we have retained some sparks of gender equality in another hand. The Philippine Daily Inquirer proudly reported that the Philippines consistently rank in the top 10 in the world in terms of gender equality according to the respectable World Economic Forum. http://globalnation.inquirer.net/new...-equality--WEF

Mabuhay!

to be continued...

Dear Love

"Dear, if you do not receive any letter from me, think only that I am very busy, but that I always remember you."

- Rizal in Paris to Blumentritt, 9 September 1889, The Rizal-Blumentritt Correspondence, 284.

We have been counting up circumstantial evidences because there was no direct evidence. So, the fifth circumstantial evidence of my thesis is that Rizal developed an extremely affectionate relationship with another male person -- Blumentritt. He was among the special few who received a farewell letter when Rizal died.

http://panitikan.com.ph/criticism/wasrizalgay.htm

UP Professor Neil Garcia, in summarizing the Rizal-Blumentritt correspondence had remarked "how affectionate and loving this epistolary discourse could become, so much so that they would write (jokingly) how they are “desperately in love” with the other, would keep sending photos, bric-a-brac, mementos and flowers (!) to the other, would say that they would "dare everything" for the sake of the other, would profess that they were always thinking of the other,or would suffer disturbing dreams about the other. In one letter, Rizal relates that his strange dream of his “dear brother and friend” ended with him “waking up tired and sweating; it was very hot on the bed.”

Mementos and flowers to Blumentritt but only cheap stationery to Leonor Rivera?

While it is true that men can develop bonds to each other, the degree of relationships varies. In the case of Rizal and Blumentritt, they have brought it a little too far. And they know -- they joked about it.

Do others know?

Re: Rizal's Girlfriends

Post by Ateo on Thu Mar 24, 2011 2:13 pm

We are not yet half way, guys, but there has been a lot of posts already. I still have a lot of materials to show, but I surely wish there is a rebuttal or challenge from the Conservative Defense League or the Knights of Rizal, hehehehe (Grand Knight Kapatid?). That way I will be guided where to focus on and what weaknesses I need to strengthen further.

By the time we are finished, you would have seen a clearer picture of Rizal Without the Overcoat (title of the book by the country's top Rizalist, my favorite historian and ex-monk, the virgin Ambeth Ocampo). Be reminded that it is not my intention to pull down Rizal from the pedestal. In my mind, he is one of the greatest of Filipinos, he is the national hero. The intention of this thread is to forcefully -- and with fun and cynicism -- strip the myths and falsehood that well-meaning conservative historians have covered our hero and obscured the real him (ahem). Even when we were innocent kids, we were taught that Rizal had soooo many girlfriends (title of this thread) as if sexual infidilities is a good thing. Even in elementary school, our historians were in hurry to teach us that he was a playboy, lest we start suspecting that he was a playgirl, hehehehehe. Now, that you have grown up, you have to think for yourself.

Do I have a direct evidence? NO! There is none. Rizal never intended to leave direct evidence. Those who knew protected him. He did not leave any membership ID of Ladlad or same-sex marriage certificate in Austria. Our concept of "gay" today is different from that of a hundred years ago. But did he love somebody of the same sex? Did he form intimate relationships of his male friends? My answer is "yes". But like any great novel, we are only patiently building a series of tiny circumstantial evidences. Taken separately they are nothing, but taken together they nicely form a collage that shows a truer picture of our national hero.

He challenged the evil of colonialism, struggled from the lies and machinations of the clergy, he showed us the vision of a nation, he surmounted his own personal struggles. He is my hero, and he should be yours too, whatever sexuality he had.

Quote from Ghostbuster:
Meron lang talagang mga taong katulad ni Rizal na very expressive and pasionate sa kanilang pananalita, but this is without sexual malice...Meron lang sigurong mga malilikot ang pag-iisip na na-aarouse even with just a mere mention of brotherly affection...haaiizz...

To his only brother, he only signed ay "Your brother". To his fellow reformers, they had the usual closings: "Yours", "Ever yours", "Affectionately", "Always", etc., but not the drippy, sweet closings used in the Blumentritt letters. His other big set of correspondence was with Fr. Pastells, another friend. He never used the word "abrazos". Such loving word was used only for the lucky few.

Ghostbuster, your rebuttal now...

Re: Rizal's Girlfriends

Meron!

TSISMAK!

I will have to point out to you a very curious letter. It is the letter of Rizal to Blumentritt in November 1889. (Rizal in Paris to Blumentritt, 19 November 1889, The Rizal-Blumentritt Correspondence, 304.) In this letter, Rizal sounded defensive in defending the “intimate fraternity which [they] profess mutually” against “enemies [who do not] understand this sentiment [because they] don’t have a delicate sentiment” and are “rude.” While angry with the rumors, he reassured Blumentritt by saying, “you honor me enough by calling me dear friend".

Gee! May tsismaks!

And for the first time, our hero was so angry (or embarassed) that he said what other people would say in this situation. "I have no more comments to make." "Perhaps you may undertand me."

No comments!

This brings to us our sixth circumstantial evidence: TSISMAKS.

Coverup by Historians

In order to understand how and why historians covered up the true sexuality of our hero, let us examine briefly the life of an even gayer and bigger hero than Rizal. I am referring to Mahatma Gandhi of India who up to now remains the apostle of non-violent resistance for the world.

His latest biographer now claims tha Gandhi was gay (bisexual). By the way, the new biographer is no ordinary writer. He is a former executive editor of the New York Times and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/28/mahatma-gandhi-bisexual-_n_841410.html

The guy on the left with a beautiful de-cuatro sitting position is Gandhi and the one the right is actually a great looking, super-rich, body builder of German-Jewish ancestry Hermann Kallenbach. If Kallenbach looked like a peasant here it is because he followed the simple lifestyle espoused by Gandhi.

According to the new biography, Gandhi wrote to Kallenbach about "how completely you have taken possession of my body. This is slavery with a vengeance." Gandhi nicknamed himself "Upper House" and Kallenbach "Lower House," and he made Lower House promise not to "look lustfully upon any woman." The two then pledged "more love, and yet more love . . . such love as they hope the world has not yet seen." Eventually, Gandhi left his wife to live with Kallenbach.

Well, all these were not openly known by Gandhi fans before. In most other historical book about Gandhi, Kallenbach was simply described as "very close friend" for whom he had "brotherly affection".

And like Rizal and Blumentritt, Gandhi and Kallenbach also exchanged numerous mails. While many noticed that the mails were affectionate, others like Ghostbuster readily pointed out that Gandhi was just a passionate and expressive person.

Do the explanations sound familiar? Yes, they do, because the same explanations used to hide Gandhi's sexuality were also used to hide Rizal's true sexuality. Both Rizal and Gandhi were explained to be passionate persons writing letters to their "very best brotherly friend".

Yeah right, baby. Very Happy

Hhahaha! Rushmore! I am so happy to see you and my other loyalists, hehehehe. No, I did not leave you.

Hahaha! Welcome back to the thread, DAP, kahit na medyo iba na nga lang site, hehehehe.

This is the continuation of our Advanced Rizal Life Course (you need to have an A+ for your basic RizLife course before I will allow you to take this elective, so BibleBot/Kapatid, don't bother to apply).

We explore two major line of inquiry. First, we examine the mind of Rizal. How? We study his novels. As Viola asserted, the novels were autobiographical. Rizal wrote into his novel what he could not admit openly. The personalities in the novels depict various aspects of Rizal's personality.

Second, we dig deep into Rizal's personality. Palagi lang ba siyang mabait? Abnormal naman seguro pag ganyan na palagi kang mabait, so I am sure di ganyan si Rizal. Mataray ba siya? Hmmm. Hmmm...

Abangan.

Anong sir "Ate"? Don't murder my name.
